Lauren B. Gerson, MD
University of California San Francisco
San Francisco, CA

Dr. Gerson’s clinical activities have focused on two major clinical areas in gastroenterology: (1) Evaluation of patients with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastrointestinal motility disorders; (2) evaluation and management of patients with obscure gastrointestinal hemorrhage and other small bowel disorders. Dr. Gerson has served as a local and national referral source for patients with chronic GERD, Barrett’s esophagus (BE), and esophageal and gastric motility disorders. Evaluation of these patients has included endoscopic evaluation and further evaluation with esophageal pH and motility assessments. Since 2009, Dr. Gerson has been able to offer esophageal impedance studies and high resolution esophageal manometry in addition to 48-hour Bravo pH studies. Her associated clinical research program has included evaluation of efficacy of lifestyle modifications in GERD, clinical studies of new agents for patients with refractory GERD, and new testing and treatment options for patients with Barrett’s esophagus. Dr. Gerson’s other major clinical focus has included evaluation of patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) and/or iron-deficiency anemia. Dr. Gerson has served as a referral physician and instructor in capsule endoscopy since 2000 and deep enteroscopy since 2004. Deep enteroscopy is utilized for treatment of small bowel vascular disorders in addition to diagnosis and management of small bowel inflammatory and other neoplastic disorders. Her associated clinical research has included studies evaluating long-term outcomes of patients with OGIB after capsule endoscopy and double balloon enteroscopy, and efficacy of both of these modalities in the treatment of patients with obscure bleeding.
